Year 7 Catch-Up Funding

What is Year 7 Catch-Up Funding?

The literacy and numeracy catch-up premium provides schools with an additional £500 for each Year 7 Student who did not achieve at least level 4 in reading and / or Maths at the end of Key Stage 2.

It is provided to all state-funded schools with a Year 7 cohort, including special schools, alternative provision (AP) settings and pupil referral units (PRUs).

Ixworth Free School is eligible for Year 7 Catch-Up Funding. We opened in September 2014 and only received our first Year 7 Catch-Up Funding in March 2015.

What is Year 7 Catch-Up Curriculum?

Literacy skills

Year 7 students are being supported in two ways: a reading/phonics programme and access to Lexia.

Lexia is predominantly phonics based, focusing on the acquisition of literacy skills. This phonics intervention is accessible, engaging and promotes confidence and positive self-esteem as well as progression. The programme starts at a low level, beginning at initial letter level and includes a simple comprehension element, but has a more mature, age-appropriate interface. It has content ranging from basic phonological awareness to more advanced decoding skills. Phonemic awareness and decoding strategies are so important for quality reading comprehension to support success at Secondary school level in order to be able to access the curriculum. It supports the identification of each pupil’s needs to tailor the intervention needed and promote progress. Pupils work through the system independently and at their own pace. Our excellent HLTA facilitates this programme and works with small groups and individual students

Numeracy skills

During the Lent Term, students will work on ‘Fractions & Angles’ and ‘Symmetry & Probability’. As with the Lexia programme, the numeracy intervention is accessible, engaging and promotes confidence as well as progression. Once again, our excellent HLTA facilitates this programme and works with small groups and individual students.
